1. Corporate Innovation Governance: A Practical Guide. Article 2 — HOW by Susana Jurado Apruzzese. Innovation leaders' most important tools for managing innovation are (i) innovation thesis which encapsulates their innovation strategy, ambition, and investment policy, (ii) innovation portfolio to track all their initiatives and investments, (iii) innovation funnel to track and influence the development of aforementioned, and (iv) an innovation accounting system to measure their efforts and results. Susana is one of the rare leaders who has put all of that into practice.
2. Nuclear Ambidexterity by Álvaro Urech. Exploiting and exploring, sustaining and reshaping, "running the business" and "changing the business," are all various forms of how people describe organisational ambidexterity. This elusive capability to concurrently operate two, seemingly, opposing systems attracts academics and professionals alike. Álvaro draws on his background and rich experience to explore the topic through the lens of physics.
3. When the system fails by Andrew Hollo. Over time the organisation's systems will slowly evolve to serve the organisation first, and customer last. Consequently, these customers are most likely to leave once they experience the breakdown in the relationship.
4. Your Startup Is Probably Dead On Arrival by Steve Blank. Although Steve writes about startups, his warning applies to corporate innovators as well—if you started working on your idea more than two years ago it is very likely that many of your initial assumptions are simply no longer true.
5. On Effectively Communicating Ideas by Bruno Pešec [subscriber exclusive]. Success of any idea hinges on our ability to share it with others. "Thinking out loud" with others might help you develop the idea, but it will rarely help with getting the idea across. In this issue I go deep into three types of communication: soliciting feedback, ensuring support, and securing resources.
