When you “allow” your people to spend 20% of their time on “their” innovation projects, you are in essence increasing their work-load by the same amount. Their peers (and sometimes their bosses) will still expect them to fully deliver. Don’t be an ass, and make sure to clearly communicate that 20% is sacrosanct.
