Innovation. Growth. Transformation. Change.
When they result in success, the story is told backwards, with a good heap of mythologising what happened. There always seems to be some sort of gold thread, a piece of the puzzle missing, and somehow everything was a linear sequence of events.
As anyone who has ever been part of the above can tell, that couldn't be further from the truth. And that is why, when approaching innovation, growth, transformation, and change initiatives, it would be an absolute folly to think in linear terms.
We must think broadly, explore a multitude of possibilities, their potential outcomes, and our available ways and means to handle them, all in service of our desired ends and outcomes.
Over the years I have refined a simple method I came to call the "S.O.S. Approach." The capital letters stand for, in order, scenarios, options, and strategy. To expand:
