What have you tried?

Something didn't go as planned? Failure is imminent?

Pause. Take a breath.

This most likely isn't a life or death situation.

Make a list of things you've tried.

Then add three columns to each entry:

  • what you thought would happen,
  • what actually happened, and
  • what you think was the cause of difference between the previous two.

Now make a list of things to try.

Write what you expect to happen for each entry.

Now go and try those things.

Make sure to document the actual results.

See? Learning on the job doesn’t have to be difficult.
