- Description: Which decisions deserve your conviction?

Say that strategy should be dynamic and half the audience hears something you did not mean. They hear constant change, direction that shifts with every quarterly wobble, and teams that stop believing anything announced from the top.

That objection is fair, for two reasons. First, the word dynamic itself has become part of vocabulary used to create plausible deniability. Second, whiplash has a real cost, and organisations that reverse course too often end up executing nothing.

So the useful question for an executive team is not how often to change, but rather: which decisions deserve commitment and which deserve flexibility.

Sort them by how expensive they are to undo. Building a plant, acquiring a company, exiting a market, committing to a platform: these are slow and costly to reverse, and they deserve your analysis, your argument, and then your commitment. Once made, defend them. Changing your mind on this class of decision every six months destroys more value than being slightly wrong.

Everything else is cheaper than it looks. Pricing structures, channel choices, which segment to serve first, how a product is packaged. These can be run as considered bets, reviewed against evidence, and revised without anyone losing face.

Most executive teams treat both classes the same way, which produces the worst of both. Endless deliberation over the reversible, and unexamined conviction on the irreversible.

The second habit worth building is deciding on triggers rather than on the calendar.

Most strategy reviews happen because it is "that time of the year." That guarantees you are either acting on stale information or holding a meeting with nothing new to discuss.

The alternative is to write down, in advance, what would cause you to reconsider. A competitor moves below a price point. A customer segment stops renewing at a certain rate. A regulatory decision goes a particular way. Write down the number, name the owner, and let the trigger call the meeting.

Third, separate the speed of the decision from the quality of the information. The aim is the best possible decision as quickly as it can responsibly be made, not the perfect decision eventually. Waiting should be a consequence of your deliberate choice, and not a side effect of your indecision.

A strategy that lives is stable where stability matters and adaptive everywhere else. That combination is harder than either extreme, but in today's environment it is a necessity.

Two questions for your next executive session. Which of our current commitments would be genuinely expensive to reverse? And for everything else, what evidence are we waiting for, and how will we recognise it?
