All innovation and improvement efforts can fit into one of the following three categories:

- *Kaizen,* continuous or incremental improvement and innovation.
- *Kaikaku,* breakthrough or radical improvement and innovation.
- *Kabuki,* theatrical or fictitious improvement and innovation.

Two of these produce positive and enduring results.
